Then you raise the look to the prominent Santa Barbara Castle, concretly to the Benacantil Mountain’s slopes and you’ll see it. This particular profile sculpted on the rocks – Cara del Moro (Moor Face) – reminds us the best keeped legend of Alicante and, apparently, the reason of its actual name.
The legend tells the story of one Califa and his only daughter, Cántara. He found two pretenders to marry her – Ali and Almanzor – and to decide the right one, the beloved father orders each one to perform a concret task. He ordered Almanzor to cross the world till India and pick up some spices to bring as present for Cántara; for Ali it was to build a ditch from Tibi’s reservoir to Alicante. Instead of that, Ali prefered to win Cántara with songs and poems, falling both in love. As Almanzor returned with the spices, the Califa decided to marry Cántara with him. Downcast after this decision, Ali suicided dropping himself from a cliff, and then Cántara followed him. After the love tragedy, the Califa died of sadness, bringing the town the name of Alicantara by its subjects and this carved profile on the mountain slopes as homage to the Califa.
A tragic (true or untrue?) legend that take us to another time engraved throught the Benacantil mountain. A free Alicante highlight which serves as perfect hook for a quiet visit into the Santa Barbara Castle. But. . . that’s will be another time. By the moment, let’s think that Ali and Cantara are together in another perfect place.
If you are in Alicante with some spare time and you don’t know what to do, there’s a lovely place you could go. It’s an intimate asturian bar/restaurant where you can taste and discover some of the best dishes of their region only by 1€ each beer or wine with tapa. I bet you could not take only one.

Things I recommend to taste:
- Spicy Mussels called : “Asesinos” (Killers). If you really love spicy things, you should try the : “Psicópatas” (Psychopath). The stronger version of the killers.
- Cabrales Cheese. They have several dishes with it, but I recommend the pâté, and the “Sepia al Cabrales”.
- “Papas locas” (Crazy Crisps): Fried potatoes with some spices. You’ll become addicted! You can also ask for the spicy version called : “Papas locas cabreás”( Crazy crisps pissed off) You can even choose how angry do you want them to be.
How to get there?
It’s easy, it’s close to Plaza de Toros (Plaza España).
And If you’re wondering “what does Asturian Gastronomy consist of ?” don’t worry, we could sum it up for you saying that their specialities are:
- Fabada (A stew made from dried white beans)
- Beef (Famous by their high quality)
- Cider (Also used for cooking)
- Fish and seafood
- Cheese (Including the outstanding blue cheese Cabrales )

Swept away from the main coast there is a secret place, populated by Italian slaves brought by King Charles III in early 18th century to defend the coast against pirates attacks .
Currently this small island (just 1800 lenght m), a protecting area of Alicante, remains those old legends which inspired differents artists along the last century. Tabarca is compound by its amazing wall, a charming church and coloured-facade houses surrounded of palms and lovely beaches .
The main attraction in Tabarca are submarinism and seafood spots. Under its crystal waters (you should ask for official permission) you could find plenty of different aquatic species such as sea bass or gilthead. After all, Tabarca is property of the EU’s Zone of Special Protection due the rich fauna and flora, ensuring a perfect spot for ecotourism lovers.
Seafood is another quality of Tabarca due its fresh fish specialities. The “Caldero Alicantino” is one of the most typical dishes of Tabarca, a delicious rice served with fish and all-i-oli (garlic sauce), a different concept of famous “paella”. Fresh prawns or lobsters are quite typical and fished by the residents.
The best way to reach Tabarca is taking a boat (known as catamarán) since differents sea points: itself Alicante or Santa Pola, the nearest harbour to the island and just a 30 minute-trip with schedules since 9 a.m. till 6 p.m.
Tabarca seems to be a haunted island knocked by the waves and loneliness so could be interesting to profite those last “summer” days (even if we are reaching Halloween) to discover this misterious paradise still natural and almost unknown by the multitude.
